Support Stacks

Evidence-informed supplement stacks, product notes and research links for sleep, nervous system regulation, gut-brain axis support, microbiome health and whole-body function.

Each product is included because it has a clear role within a functional system, not because it is a quick fix. These notes draw from product information, peer-reviewed research and emerging clinical research.

Nervous System & Sleep Support

Why this matters

Sleep and nervous system regulation drive each other. When the nervous system is stuck in a sympathetic, fight-or-flight state, the body can struggle to downshift into the parasympathetic state needed for sleep, repair and recovery.

Poor sleep then gives the nervous system less opportunity to reset, which can leave the body more reactive the next day. It becomes a loop: dysregulation disrupts sleep, and poor sleep can keep the nervous system dysregulated.

What the research is showing

Magnesium L-threonate, L-theanine and apigenin are commonly used together as a melatonin-free sleep stack. Each has been studied individually for sleep quality, relaxation, stress response or nervous system signalling, and this exact combination is now being investigated in clinical research for sleep quality and stress.

The important point is not that this stack forces sleep. It supports several systems involved in downshifting: magnesium for nervous system function and sleep architecture, L-theanine for mental overactivity and stress response, and apigenin for GABA-A-related calm and cellular signalling.

L-Theanine

California Gold Nutrition

L-Theanine

L-theanine is an amino acid naturally found in tea. This product provides 200 mg L-theanine per capsule, which sits within the commonly researched range for sleep and relaxation support. L-theanine is often used for the “wired but tired” pattern, where the body is exhausted but the mind is still active.

Why I've included this

I’ve included L-theanine because not everyone needs sedation. Many people need support for mental downshifting: less background activation, less rumination and a smoother transition into sleep. In this stack, L-theanine sits between magnesium and apigenin. It supports the calm-focus side of the nervous system without relying on melatonin.

Liposomal Apigenin

Codeage

Liposomal Apigenin

Apigenin is a plant flavonoid found in chamomile and other plants. This product provides 50 mg apigenin in a liposomal phospholipid complex. Apigenin is researched for its relationship with GABA-A receptor activity, calmness, antioxidant activity and cellular signalling pathways. In a sleep stack, it is used for the “switching off” side of sleep support.

Why I've included this

I’ve included apigenin because it is relevant for people who feel alert, wired or unable to properly settle at night. It does not act like melatonin. It is better understood as a compound that may support calm and downshifting through GABA-A-related pathways and broader cellular signalling. Together with Magnesium L-threonate and L-theanine, it completes the non-melatonin sleep stack.

Mag3 Pure Magnesium L-Threonate

Switch Nutrition

Mag3 Pure Magnesium L-Threonate

Mag3 is a pure Magnesium L-threonate powder using Magtein®. Each serve provides 2000 mg Magnesium L-threonate, delivering 144 mg of magnesium. Magnesium L-threonate is a form of magnesium researched for its relationship with brain magnesium levels, sleep quality, mood, alertness and daytime function. This makes it different from general magnesium products that are mainly positioned around muscles, cramps or basic magnesium intake.

Why I've included this

I’ve included Mag3 because magnesium is one of the key minerals involved in nervous system regulation. When the nervous system is running in a high-alert state, sleep can become lighter, more fragmented or harder to access. Magnesium L-threonate is especially relevant here because the research is focused on the brain, sleep quality and daytime function together. For this stack, Mag3 is the foundation product.

Notes

Supplements can support the conditions for better sleep, but they work best when the rest of the evening routine is also helping the nervous system downshift. Light exposure, stress load, food timing, caffeine, hydration, movement and emotional load can all affect whether the body feels safe enough to sleep properly.

Gut Health & Microbiome Support

Why this matters

The gut microbiome is not just about digestion. It is part of a wider signalling system connected to the brain, immune system, hormones, inflammation, metabolism and stress response.

Through the gut-brain axis, the condition of the gut can influence how the body functions as a whole. This is why microbiome health is increasingly discussed in relation to mood, stress, brain fog, focus, neurodevelopmental patterns, menopause, immune function and whole-body regulation.

This category is not about treating a single condition. It is about supporting the gut ecosystem as part of the body’s wider functional system.

What the research is showing

Microbiome research is moving beyond the basic idea of “take a probiotic.” The gut ecosystem includes bacteria, yeasts, enzymes, prebiotic fuels, microbial metabolites and signalling pathways that influence the body well beyond digestion.

Syntol AMD is included because it combines probiotics, prebiotics and enzymes, with a focus on microbiome balance, mycobiome balance and healthy yeast levels. Floraphage is included because bacteriophages are an emerging area of microbiome support, working differently from standard probiotics by supporting the activity and growth of beneficial microflora already present in the gut.

The interesting direction here is targeted microbiome modulation: supporting the gut environment in a more specific way, rather than simply adding more bacteria. Urinary tract health is also worth noting as a side benefit of microbiome support, but the main focus of this category is the gut-brain axis and the role of the microbiome in whole-body function.

Microbiome + Mycobiome Support
Syntol AMD®

Arthur Andrew Medical

Syntol AMD®

Floraphage is a prebiotic bacteriophage supplement. It is not a probiotic. Rather than adding more bacteria, it is designed to support the growth and activity of beneficial microflora already present in the gut. Floraphage is positioned for microbiome support, digestive support, immune support and urinary tract health. The urinary tract angle is worth noting, but the main reason I’ve included it is its role in microbiome modulation.

Why I've included this

I’ve included Floraphage because bacteriophages represent one of the more interesting emerging areas in microbiome support. The future of gut health is likely to become more targeted than simply “take a probiotic.” Phage research is interesting because it suggests specific bacterial populations may be influenced without globally disrupting the whole microbiome.

Floraphage®

Floraphage® is a prebiotic bacteriophage supplement. It is not a probiotic. Instead of adding more bacteria, it is designed to support the activity and growth of beneficial microflora already present in the gut.

Why I've included this

Floraphage is a probiotic-boosting phage for digestive support, immune support and urinary tract health. The product works by interacting with certain bacteria to generate prebiotic nutrients that beneficial bacteria can use as fuel. The brand also states that laboratory testing showed improved CFU activity when Floraphage was combined with probiotic products (Syntol).
